BMAF Road Relays 2006

(Sutton Park in Autumn)

A gathering of the Veteran clans at Sutton Park this year... but no Ray Elston. Les proved a willing reserve and certainly did not let the side down.

As usual Roger ran the first leg, tracking the whole way Dave Trickett from Hallamshire Harriers, who ran the fastest V60 leg of the day. No matter what he tried Roger could not bridge the gap that grew particularly down the long hill. Handing over therefore in 2nd place to John.

John has been suffering recently from an injury, but gamely pushed on only dropping 4 places to (it must be said) much 'younger' men. Do hope you have not exacerbated the injury John?

So Les, up against much faster men found the course and competition very stiff. Observing from the 'bleachers' he held his form together really well, and only lost 7 places over the 3 miles of hill and dale, to bring the team home in 12th place overall (out of an entry of 23 teams). A very creditable effort in the circumstances.

Times? Roger 17:34... John 19:56... Les 23:48 (1:01:19) The winning time from Clydesdale Harriers who retained their trophy was 54:27, winning by only 2 seconds from Bingley Harriers with Aldershot and Farnham AC 3rd in 55:22.

Tresco Marathon - 23rd April

Andy Johnson was 6th overall in 3:25:08. The course on the Isles of Scilly consists of 8 laps of (mostly concrete) road/paths with hills on every lap.

Easter Monday - Bampton to Tiverton

Ray with the Vet/65 cup, Roger with the Vet/60 cup and Jim with a coffee cup !

The Vet/60s at the 60th running of the Bampton to Tiverton Road Race (about 7.15 miles). Great race... a reminder of why it has been so popular over the years... grief when it was first run I was 1 month old! Jim finished in 55:41, Ray in 50:40 and 1st Vet/65, and Roger in 43:42 for 1st Vet/60. Nice to be supported (all the way from Leamington Spa) by Mandy. Mary R took the photo.

The Taunton Marathon and Half Marathon

Sunday 2nd of April 2006 saw the holding of the 23rd Taunton marathon. Martin Pearse of Taunton AC was first man home in the marathon in 2:41:38 finishing five minutes ahead of another Taunton local Chris Wear. The half event was a much closer affair with just over 30 seconds separating the first four home, with the eventual winner being Pete Waumsley of Tamar Trotters finishing in 1:11:28.

Exmouth Harriers Adrian Kearns completed the marathon in 3:07:41, and Trevor Cope finished the Half in 1:51:22.

Teignbridge 10 - 26th March 2006

Well it wasn't cold, but the rain started (again) a minute or two after the start. By the time we all finished we were saturated. Even the cold showers in the changing rooms felt warm!

Hugh in the Falklands

On Sunday 19th March Hugh Marsden completed the double in the Falkland Islands. On Sunday he ran the Marathon in a time of 3.04.00 over six minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. Just two weeks ago he won the Half Marathon. Hugh will be back in Exmouth next week.

Also on Sunday the Harriers hosted the last round of the Westward League Cross-Country which was held at Bicton College. The League is held over six rounds over the Winter months.

In the Exmouth event 10 Harriers completed, first home being Dave Stone in 3rd place in 35.55. Andy Kennedy was 28th in 41.49, Paul Champion was 35th in 42.44, Lee Russell 47th in 45.21, Tim Gent 48th in 45.28, John Perratt 53rd in 46.23, Ray Elston 58th in 47.45, Jim Wyatt 65th in 49.48, Les Turner 67th in 51.18, and Dave Eveleigh completing the line up for the Harriers in 76th in 63.14.

Bideford Half Marathon - 5th March

Paul Samways led the way for the men finishing in 44th position overall in 1:24:50. A PB by an incredible 8:40 on his previous best of 1:33:30 which he set at Bideford last year.

BMAF Cross Country Championships - Bournemouth, 5th March

Cold, windy, with sun/cloud... and a pretty flat and twisty 'parkland' course, so a very frenetic first mile. Roger led the Vet/60s on the first lap, but was gradually overhauled by the big-guns. By lap 3 he was struggling in 6th, but on the final lap managed to catch the whole 'gaggle' and overtake the 5th. So, 5th Vet/60 in 30:31. Just 29 seconds covered the first 6 in the category! The team? 5th Vet/60 (three to count). The Clydesdale boys retained their Championship.

Here is Ray powering along the back straight. Ray finished in 38th place in 35:52. Jim Wyatt was our 4th man, and unfortunatley Mary did not manage to get a photo Jim... never mind, he finished in 127th in 38:34.

Darwood 3 Hills Challenge - 26th Feb

On Sunday 26th of February 6 Harriers went to Axeminster in Devon for the Darwood 3 Hills Challenge which was an 10 mile multi-terrain race.

On race day the weather was on the runner's side with a dry and sunny day with just a light wind. The Harriers had a very good day with 3 prizes in total. First of them went to Shaun Lock who come home 3rd overall (2nd senior man) in a time 1.10.17, Shaun was just 1 minute behind the 2nd place runner. Next was Joe Pascoe in 6th in a time of 1.12.10; Dave Stone was in 7th place in a time of 1.12.55; Paul Champion was in 22nd (1st vet 50) in a time of 1.19.39. In the Ladies race, Dawn Teed was in 70th (1st lady/vet 40) in a 1.36.55, next was Sue Wilkin who was 121st in a time of 1.57.05.

The overall winner of the race was Garry Perratt of Axe Valley Runners in a time of 1.07.20 and there were 145 finishers.

1st Vet/60 (and 55) in 1:05:22 (not happy with that). The only other Harrier there was Trevor Cope who finished in 1:22:25.

Fulfords Five - 5th February

Exeter Harriers' Mark Cowan took third place in Sunday's Fulfords Five road race - the first local man home behind Plymouth-based duo Ashley Humphries (25:16) and Vet/40 Stuart Hall (25:20).

And high placings from Cowan's clubmates gave Exeter Harriers the first men's team award. Andrew Chambers was sixth, Simon Minting 11th and Gordon Seward 22nd.

Despite winning the race last year, Cowan was not disappointed with his performance, for despite the cold temperature, the standard at the front of the field was hotter than ever.

Race numbers were at a record high, too, with this year's pre-entry figure matching the total entry in 2005.

At the two-mile point, 20-year-old Humphries was leading the race, just ahead of England international marathon runner Hall. Cowan was lying in fifth place behind Paul Holley, of Axe Valley Runners, Bideford AC's Wayne Stevens, and Joe Pascoe from Exmouth Harriers.

But a mile from home Cowan managed to up the pace and move up to third spot. "It's not an easy course, but conditions were good," said Cowan afterwards.

"The crowds were very supportive all the way round. I've just got back after injury and now I'm going to get down to a couple of months of hard training before the start of the track season."

First lady home was Tiverton Harrier Caroline Hewitt, who finished 28th in 30:27.

Express & Echo - 7th February 

SCXC Championships (Bicton) 28-Jan-06

Jo Harvey was not only the pride of Devon, but the South West as well following her superb second place at the Saucony South of England Cross-Country Championships at Bicton on Saturday.

Devon's highly successful staging of this prestigious event for the second time since 2003 clearly demonstrated once again that this championship can be successfully staged outside London - despite some negative comments about the event failing to attract the same numbers it would in London.

The scenic course was challenging - car parking, refreshments and changing facilities readily available and the atmosphere warm and welcoming. Some home counties clubs made a weekend of it and Blackheath and Bromley Harriers alone booked a total of 100 beds in two hotels, bringing a welcome boost to the local economy.

It was thanks to many unpaid officials and helpers representing the Devon County AA who had planned the event for the past 18 months that it was agian a success, with numbers up on three years ago.

Jo Harvey relished having these championships on home soil, as she is having to travel a lot this winter as her incredible season, in which she has received two international call-ups, gets better and better.

On Saturday, in the Under-17 ladies' race, she got herself into a breakaway group of four, led by favourite Steph Twell from Aldershot, Farnham and District - already pre-selected for the World Cross Championships in Japan in March. Twell was the eventual winner in 18mins 44secs, but such is the ability of the leading duo, that they led home the Under-20 women who were running in the same race.

Having moved up to second place at the halfway mark of the 5,000m course, Harvey started to close on Twell, who managed to up the pace again, eventually winning by seven seconds. In the same race, another Exeter Harrier, Chloe Anderson, finished a creditable 34th (22mins 29secs) out of the 96 finishers.

The South West looked impressive in the Under-17 men's race, with Patrick Hambly (Torbay AC) taking gold and Phil Norman (North Devon AC) bronze.

First local man home in the senior men's race of 15,000m was Exeter's Mike Feighan in 90th place. And with 550 finishers, he was not disappointed with his position.

"It was a brilliant course," he said afterwards. "Tough underfoot and challenging. There were at least three hills on each lap. "And the meeting was well organised. Competing against such tough opposition gives you a real reality check," he added. "You see the high standard of cross country running. Taking part was a real treat."

Other results, Under 15 girls: 33rd E Weeks (Exeter Harriers); 50th H Bayley (Harriers). There were 125 finishers.
